The Humble Beginning of SKID
- The Deaf Aid Society was born.
- School for the Deaf was started in a vacant house, belonging to of one of the committee members, with 20 students and 2 teachers
- One of the teachers was a Belgium nun who worked at the convent in Madras
- The school shifted to a larger rented building, thanks to well-wishers.
- The number of students increased to 40.
- The enrollment of large number of hearing impaired children had occurred, the need for better infrastructure need and learning-friendly environment to cope up with the rapid growth.
- Around 1.5 acres of land in a prime location was donated by a philanthropic couple Dr. Zal and Mrs. Gool Kothavala, in the name of their daughter Sheila who was a founding member and worked passionately for the cause.
- New Infrastructure was developed by the school through donations from well wishers.
- The school was shifted to the current premises and was called ‘Sheila Kothwala Institute for the Deaf’. It was officially inaugurated by the Arch bishop of bangalore.
